The Centre for Metropolitan Studies tries to understand processes of transformation taking place in Sao Paulo and other metropolises.

The Centre was conceived with the idea that a strictly disciplinary approach would result in fragmented understanding, and in knowledge that is dispersed and insufficient. Thus our research activities try to articulate basic thinking processes and knowledge, as well as the empirical experience of a number of disciplines that enable addressing the issues of the metropolis in all of their complexity and scope. For this reason the center has researchers with different backgrounds such as urban studies, demographics, anthropology, political science, communication and sociology.

Between 2001 and 2005, CEM developed projects in Urban Studies, Demographics, Labour Studies, Politics and Urban Policy, Urban Conflict and Cultural Associativeness. Looking ahead to the 2005 - 2008 period, studies will be split into three major groups: the labor market, social networks and intermediation, living conditions, the State and public policies, and sociability and urban life.
