1-) "Housing policies and housing conditions in São Paulo"

The research analysis the recent housing policies developed in Sao Paulo as well as investigates the main popular housing alternatives in the metropolis. The work collects primary data on housing policies and different housing alternatives from public municipal agencies in addition to geocoded database that allows the superposition of census tracts information. Using a Geographic Information System (GIS), the research characterizes the population living in each type of housing alternatives – favelas and other types of settlements, questioning the results from the urban studies and urban sociology literature.

2-) "The economic realms of the paulista elite"

The objective of this research is to analyze the economic relations that take place within the elite in São Paulo, dating from mid-1970s onwards. This investigation dialogues with other researches carried out in the Department of Political Science/USP and at CEM/Cebrap, which basically analyzes local politics in São Paulo, the field of local power and the political process dynamics in recent years.

This is an original empirical research on the properties of the companies in the “Junta Comercial do Estado de São Paulo” (Commercial Association from the State of Sao Paulo) and in the “Bolsa de Valores de São Paulo” (Sao Paulo Stock Exchange center).

The material is analyzed using a social network methodology, which crosses people and entities names checking the sort of links that are established. This methodology allows the observation of the social connections and the structure of the economic relations within the elite as well as its dynamics over time.

3.) "Political representation in São Paulo"

The research investigates patterns of voting distribution in different representation levels (municipal, state and federal) and offices in dispute (Executive and Legislative) based on election results and social-economic data on the electorate. It tries to test theses on the social bases of the political representation and to analyze its relationship with the formulation and implementation of public policies.

4.) "Analysis of the transformations in the distribution of metropolitan health equipment"

The project examines the transformations concerning the supply and demand for health services and equipment, aiming to evaluate the balance between the investments made and the demand of the population. It also aims to identify the participation of the private sector in the financing of high complex procedures, besides a characterization of the kind of population that has access to these services.

5.) "Spatial dynamics of the supply and demand for elementary education in the Metropolitan Region of São Paulo (MRSP)"

The research seeks to verify local conditions of supply and demand for elementary education in the MRSP, highlighting areas that present a high concentration of children and high rates of population growth, in order to identify potential demand for expansion in the school system. This research uses as databases the census tract maps, associated with the respective databases of the Brazilian School Census.

6-) "Social dyamics, segregation and poverty in São Paulo"

This project aims to analyze recent social dynamics in the metropolitan region of São Paulo (MRSP) with an emphasis on the situations of urban poverty and social segregation processes in the territory. The project makes use of existent cartography and/or produced especially for this investigation as well as demographic data and equipments such as schools, health units, social assistance, sports, culture and leisure.

From the crossing of these different information, the research investigates the social situations in the metropolis, the effects of segregation processes on the social vulnerability conditions, unequal access to the public policies and other urban benefits more generally.

7.) "State and infrastructure policies: political choices, social network and distributive consequences" - research concluded in December 2003


The study analyzes spatial and historical dynamics of the policies on urban infrastructure (including drainage, canalization, transport system, paving and large structures) and its social impacts. The research is based on documental sources relating to contracts signed by the public administration and interviews, using the social network method of analysis.
