Seminar on the use of GIS in the Metropolitan Region of Campinas receives a CEM researcher

Sandra Gomes went to Santa Barbara at the invitation of the organization to share her experience in the area of Transference with the public sector.

On August 8, researcher Sandra Gomes participated in the 1st seminar on the Geographic Information Systems (GIS) for the Administration of City Development in the Metropolitan region of Campinas in Santa Barbara D’Oeste. Sandra was invited by the Metropolitan Agency of Campinas (Agemcamp), organizers of the event, to speak about CEM’s experience in the development and application of GIS with the public sector.

The seminar brought together city mayors and vice-mayors, municipal secretaries and technicians from the 19 areas that constitute the Campinas Metropolitan Regions besides other surrounding cities. Beyond dealing with the subject of GIS, differentiating it from geoprocessing, the importance of the use of these systems in public administration was highlighted through case studies. Some accessible systems, already in use by several municipalities, were also presented.

Through its Transference area, CEM continues to work with the development and use of GIS. Since 2001, they have carried out projects in education, social vulnerability, income transfer, housing and shantytowns (favelas), development of central regions, and socio-environmental indicators in the municipalities of Sao Paulo, Guarulhos, Embu, Suzano, Taboao da Serra and Itapecerica da Serra.
