Electoral Maps
The geographic distribution of votes is fundamental information to understand the electoral dynamic of the city of Sao Paulo. Through this distribution, it is possible to know where the electoral bases of each party are, or rather, the locations where the candidates perform the best. It is also possible to know where the candidates have their worst performance. Even though voting results for each voting booth of the city is public information supplied by the Electoral Courts (TRE), rarely is its publication done in a systematic, easy-to-access way, which makes these results practically unknown to the majority of the population.
To change this situation, CEM has used the TRE data to create the “Maps of Vote Distribution in the Municipal Elections of the City of Sao Paulo”. Two editions, 2000 and 2004 are already available.
The maps include mayor candidates with more than 2% of the valid votes, elected city council members, blank and void ballot and party list votes. They show the vote distribution for all voting locations, that is, for all the voting booths situated at the same address.
We also know that occasionally a voting location does not appear to be situated precisely on the map. This happens because the location was based on an address and post code declared on the TRE-SP registry which can show errors. Furthermore, many public areas have changed their names or do not exist in our database. In some cases, these locations were given addresses based only on the postal code which also hinders knowing their precise location. In general, there is greater precision in large scales maps, but some errors may appear on smaller scale maps.
